clan
Latin planta, a cutting or sprout, passed through British Celtic into Irish as cland, 'offspring'; the Gaelic clann reached English as the word for a Highland kin-group. Walter Scott's Highland romances sent clan on into French, German, Spanish and Russian, and in 1866 it gave the Ku Klux Klan its name.
