chintz
Printed Indian calico was chīṇṭ, 'spotted', probably from Sanskrit citra 'bright, variegated'; English traders said 'chints' for the plural, and the plural spelt chintz became the name of the cloth. The Dutch said sits, which became Russian sitets, and the Portuguese chita became Brazil's cheap floral cotton.
