cardigan

The Welsh kingdom of Ceredigion, 'Ceredig's land', was anglicized as Cardigan and became an earl's title. The 7th Earl led the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854, and the knitted woolen waistcoat his officers wore was named after him — and knitted its way into French, Russian, Japanese and Korean.
