carat

Greek kerátion, 'little horn', was the carob pod and seed, and carob seeds served as a standard small weight. Arabic qīrāṭ carried the unit to Italian and French, and because the Roman gold coin weighed 24 such units, carat also came to measure gold purity in 24ths.
