bard
The Celtic praise-poet's title was known to Roman writers, lived on in Irish, Gaelic, Welsh and Breton, and entered Scots in 1449 as a word for vagrant minstrels before Romantics made it noble. Through Latin and French it reached German poets, and Russian, where Soviet singer-songwriters called themselves bards.
