Baal

Baʿal simply meant 'owner, lord, husband' across the Semitic world; as the title of the Canaanite storm god it became, in the Bible, the very name of a false god. The plain noun lives on in Modern Hebrew baʿal 'husband' and, through Yiddish balebos, in American English balabusta.
