azure
Lapis lazuli was mined at Lāžvard in Badakhshan, and the place gave Persian and Arabic their word for the blue stone; Europeans read the initial l- as the French article l', leaving azur 'sky blue'. The same word is the basic 'blue' of Spanish, Portuguese and Tagalog (azul, asul), Italian azzurro and Turkish lacivert 'navy'.
