atoll

Atoll is the one Maldivian word in English: Dhivehi atoḷu named the ring-shaped island groups, and a French traveller shipwrecked there in 1602 brought it to Europe; Darwin's coral-reef theory made it the scientific term in every European language, and Bikini Atoll made it infamous.
