arsenal
Dār aṣ-ṣināʿa, 'house of manufacture', named the shipyards of the Arab Mediterranean. Venice applied it to its great dockyard, the Arsenale, and English took it from Italian; Spanish and Catalan kept it as atarazana and drassana, Genoese tersanà gave the Ottomans their tersane, and only later did arsenal shift from building ships to storing weapons.
