Names
Anne
Anne is Hannah, 'grace', after Greek dropped the throaty ḥ. Christian tradition gave the name to Mary's mother, and through Greek, Latin and French it became Anna, Ana and Anne across Europe and Ana in Georgia and Tonga; its pet forms gave English Nancy and, probably via Nan, the nanny-goat. English later re-borrowed the Hebrew shape as Hannah, and Arabic keeps it as Ḥanna.
