amber
Amber first meant ambergris, the sperm-whale secretion prized in perfume, called ʿanbar in Arabic after a Middle Persian word and traded from Swahili beaches to Istanbul. In Europe the name slid over to the golden fossil resin of the Baltic, perhaps because both washed up on beaches, and the whale product became 'grey amber'.
