Adonis

The beautiful youth loved by Aphrodite most likely owes his name to Phoenician ʾadōn 'lord' — the same word as Hebrew ʾĂdōnāy — taken as a name by Greeks who met his cult in the Levant. Through Latin poetry he became a byword for male beauty in French, Italian, German and English, and in 1948 a Syrian poet brought the name home to the Levant as his Arabic pen name.
