Hebrew ṣeḏeq 'righteousness' gave ṣəḏāqāh, which rabbinic Hebrew narrowed to 'charity', and ṣaddîq 'righteous one'. The Sadducees take their name from the priest Zadok, Ṣāḏôq, whose own name is from the same root, so the root holds even though the folk gloss 'the righteous ones' does not. Arabic ṣadaqa 'alms' shows the same development.
