Proto-Semitic *malk- 'king' is the base of Moloch, the biblical god of child sacrifice. The Phoenician coin legend of Malaka (Málaga), spelled mlkʾ, fits m-l-k better than the popular m-l-ḥ 'salt', but the city name's meaning is disputed. German malochen 'to slog' is not here: its Hebrew source məlāʾḵāh 'work' is from l-ʾ-k.
